The newly renovated Dana Library hosts important campus partners; the P3 Collaborative, the Graduate School-Newark, the Office of Global Initiatives and Experiential Learning, Student Retention, and Institutional Effectiveness. We are home to the RU-N Archives and the Institute of Jazz Studies, the most extensive jazz archive in the world. As a busy hub at RU-N, there is something for everyone at Dana Library.
The Institute of Jazz Studies is the world's foremost jazz archives and research library. Founded in 1952 by pioneer jazz scholar Marshall Stearns (1908-1966), the Institute has been a pioneering institution in the preservation an access of jazz heritage. IJS relocated from Stearns' apartment to Rutgers University–Newark in 1966, and it part of the Rutgers University Libraries. In 1994, IJS moved to spacious new quarters on the fourth floor of the John Cotton Dana Library at Rutgers–Newark. The Institute serves a broad clientele, including teachers, scholars, musicians, the media, record companies, filmmakers, and arts agencies.

For decades, dedicated librarians at John Cotton Dana Library collected and stewarded archival materials which were generated and compiled by the Rutgers—Newark campus community. The Rutgers University—Newark Archives was formally established in 2019 and documents the legacies of the Rutgers—Newark campus and its impact as an anchor institution in the city of Newark.
